Breast cancer. Two words that spell doom for women and men alike, conjuring up images of disfigurement, painful treatment and maybe even death.

The cost of treatment of this silent nightmare and its quality too are points that many patients have to worry about. High quality treatment means soaring hospital bills, while there are many who are unable to find proper treatment facilities.

It may be noted that globally, nearly one in four women afflicted with cancer suffer from breast cancer.

According to US breast cancer statistics, breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed form among American women, with men constituting less than one percent of new breast cancer cases.

To make matters worse, genetics does not play a singular role. Studies show that nearly seventy to eighty percent of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of this form of the disease. However, it is important to note that a woman’s risk doubles if she has a first-degree relative like a mother, sister or daughter who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Breast cancer NYC (New York City), in the year 2007, out of 100,000 women, the breast cancer incidence rate stood at 122 to 124. In the same year, 21 to 23 women died. From 2004 to 2008, the average annual cases of breast cancer among women was 5167, with 1115 succumbing.

However, there is good news at least for New York City which houses the premier Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Using cutting edge research and excellent patient care, this center is a blessing for those afflicted with cancer and its subtypes.

The center accommodates around 21000 inpatients every year and over 431000 outpatient visits annually.

Here, female breast cancer patients can undergo treatment at the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center, which incorporates mammography, ultrasound and CT scan, chemotherapy, psychological and genetic counselling.

Incidentally, the Sloan-Kettering Institute, the center’s science research arm, conducts research in eight main areas - molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, molecular pharmacology and chemistry, structural biology, developmental biology, computational biology, and cancer biology and genetics.

Other NYC breast cancer treatment centers that provide quality care include New York Cancer Hospital, Comprehensive Cancer Center and St Vincent’s Cancer Center.
